In Analogical City, Cameron McEwan argues for architecture’s status as a critical project. McEwan revisits architect Aldo Rossi as a paradigmatic figure of the critical rational tradition, studying a neglected aspect of his thought — the analogical city — to excavate its potential. McEwan develops a grammar of the analogical city under the headings of Imagination, Transformation, City, Multitude, and Project. McEwan argues that the analogical city is critical, collective, and emancipatory. Analogical thought and understanding cities as analogical might open the conditions of possibility for rethinking the critical project in architecture. At a time when the humanities and the sciences are threatened by irrational thought, from climate denial to post-truth narratives, and when architecture has seemingly disavowed its critical capacity and political possibility through its commodification as an instrument of the neoliberal city, McEwan offers critical strategies, conceptual tools, figures of thought, and knowledge practices to articulate modes of thinking and acting differently within architectural criticism and practice. Today, knowledge is a common terrain of struggle and thought requires constant reinvention. The task of architecture, and critique more broadly, must be to interpret the world in order to change it. Consequently Analogical City proposes modes for imagining the city, the subject, and the world otherwise — towards a more egalitarian and critical architecture of the city. Ultimately, the analogical city is not a fully developed theory, nor is it only an intuitive, poetic, or purely formal practice, as some critics propose. McEwan argues that the analogical city is poetic and political: it always refers beyond itself towards a collective and critical project of the city, and yet it invites a series of formal, spatial, and graphic operations comprising erasure and negativity followed by substitution and remontage.

"Drawing on the vast archival resources of its Architecture and Design Collection, the UCSB Art, Design & Architecture Museum (University of California, Santa Barbara) presents an assessment of 50 years of design by Barton Myers (b. 1934), beginning with his work in the Toronto firm A.J. Diamond and Barton Myers (1967–1975) to his own offices in Toronto and Los Angeles, Barton Myers Associates (1975–present). Myers’s strongest architectural ideas come out of the planning strategies of his early neighborhood activism in 1970s Toronto, his grounding in history, and his training in the classical traditions of site and space planning. Barton Myers is an avowed urbanist—a self-described radical in his early advocacy of old-fashioned qualities like density, mixed-use of new and re-purposed materials, and contextual planning in the late 1960s when that fundamentally conservative position was considered counter-culture. Myers’ urban manifesto was codified in “Vacant Lottery,” the title of the Design Quarterly issue co-edited by Myers and Canadian architect and educator George Baird in 1978 and which led to a renewal of interest in urban planning and offered a strategy for increasing population densities within cities while preserving the existing residential fabric. The term lived on long past the journal’s circulation cycle as both an urban infill strategy and an acknowledgment of the ceding of city planning responsibility to the “lottery” of private developers. Myers’s design practice has thus always been a social justice practice as well. Myers is also a brilliant designer of residential houses that take advantage of local landscape contexts and adaptive reuse of building materials, including steel and glass. Five essays – on urban planning, civic structures, reuse of historic buildings, single- and multi-family housing, and theaters – reinforce Myers’s commitment to urbanism and reveal his flexibility with modes of modernism. Natalie Shivers introduces the early planning work in Toronto and traces the “vacant lottery” idea of neighborhood infill to the influential Grand Avenue project in Los Angeles. Howard Shubert examines the architectural and planning strategies, and political complexities, of several civic structures in Canada and the United States. Luis Hoyos explores Myers’s additions and adaptations to historic buildings in diverse urban contexts. Lauren Bricker focuses on the use of steel and other industrial materials in Myers’s houses and analyses the neighborhood-based designs of his multi-family housing. Charles Oakley describes the technical innovations, site planning, and historical underpinnings of Myers’s theaters and performance complexes."

The contribution made by Mario Ridolfi to the construction of a modern Italian identity, in its regional aspect, materialised in his Umbrian designs, starting from the watershed of 1961 which marked the voluntary exile of the architect in Marmore. Through the analysis of his architectural creations, the book reconstructs the mental itinerary pursued by Ridolfi in the elaboration of the Umbrian works, casting light on the architect's interest in the material consistency of the architectural organism, studied in the most minute detail so that the perfection of the work can render it a "living thing". In Ridolfi's work, spirit and matter, art and technology are amalgamated into a single object which always tends to the absolute. Bound up with this, in a play of continual cross-reference, is the study of the specific features of the Umbrian landscape, dominated by the figure of St. Francis of Assisi, as a fruitful and intriguing comparison to map out the contours of the research.

Il contributo di Mario Ridolfi alla costruzione di un'identità italiana moderna, nella sua declinazione regionale, si sostanzia nelle sue architetture umbre, a partire dallo spartiacque del 1961, che segna il volontario esilio dell'architetto a Marmore. Attraverso l'analisi delle sue architetture, il libro ricostruisce l'itinerario mentale che Ridolfi ha percorso nell'elaborazione delle opere umbre, mettendo in luce l'interesse dell'architetto per la matericità dell'organismo architettonico, studiato in ogni minimo dettaglio affinché la perfezione dell'opera possa renderla 'cosa viva': nell'opera ridolfiana spirito e materia, arte e tecnologia si amalgamano in un unico oggetto, che sempre tende all'assoluto. A questo si intesse, in una trama di continui rimandi, lo studio dei caratteri peculiari del paesaggio umbro, dominato dalla figura di Francesco d'Assisi, utile e interessante confronto per tracciare i contorni della ricerca.

The smooth and safe transition from one form of mobility to another, the use of different individual, shared or public means of transport on one route, must be possible in the future in a comfortable and simple way in order to give people a positive mobility experience. Today, there are already concepts and realised infrastructure projects that make the future of sustainable and networked mobility tangible in an exemplary way. This volume focuses on the importance of design: over 60 pioneering projects from the fields of design, architecture and urban planning are presented with the help of photos, plan drawings and short texts. The central theme of this publication is the influence of eastern European Jewish architects, who played a significant role in the reform movements in architecture and urban planning early in the 20th century and helped shape modernist architecture, or Neues Bauen. Due to socioeconomic factors, the local architects involved were often Jewish. In German-speaking networks academic institutions as the Bauhaus, the Deutscher Werkbund, and other were quite influential. As in Germany, due to National Socialist persecution, exile or emigration, the architects themselves have frequently been forgotten. 13 scholars and professors from eight eastern European countries and from Israel and Germany reconstruct the interactions and exchanges through the works and biographies of the architects.

Dieter Häussinger, Direktor des HITM und der Medizinischen Klinik und Poliklinik für Gastroenterologie, Hepatologie und Infektiologie und Lehrstuhlinhaber für Innere Medizin an der Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf, ist im Bereich der klinischen und experimentellen Hepatologie und Gastroenterologie aktiv. The only document we have by a 13th-century architect, the Album of Villard de Honnecourt has been the subject of writings by art and architectural historians since the 19th century and has been considered the work of an amateur since the 1970s. Jean Wirth sheds new light on the question, based on a philological study of the manuscript, and proves that Villard himself is the author of the technical drawings relating to construction. He goes on to provide convincing analyses of the art of drawing and its numerous applications, from drawing from nature to architectural plans. Drawings relating to engineering, geometry and stereotomy are treated individually, in order to convey as clearly as possible the technical processes they illustrate. An examination of the architect’s travels, the monuments he saw and his stylistic evolution allows for an accurate, corrected chronology of this work, previously considered outdated. This intelligent and detailed study will be a landmark in the rehabilitation of Villard de Honnecourt’s reputation.

L'Album de Villard de Honnecourt est le seul document personnel que nous ait laissé un architecte du XIIIe siècle. Connu et exploité par les historiens de l'art et de l'architecture dès le XIXe siècle, il a été considéré comme l'œuvre d'un amateur depuis les années 1970. Jean Wirth reprend le problème à partir de l'étude philologique des écritures contenues dans le manuscrit et montre qu'il faut attribuer à Villard les pages dont les dessins techniques relatifs à la construction passaient pour l'œuvre d'un continuateur. Dans une série de chapitres alertes, il analyse ensuite l'art du dessin et son adaptation à la multiplicité des tâches, du dessin d'après nature au relevé architectural. Les dessins relatifs à l'ingénierie, à la géométrie et à la stéréotomie sont traités un à un, afin de clarifier autant que possible les procédés techniques qu'ils transmettent. L’examen des déplacements de l’architecte, des monuments qu'il a vus et de son évolution stylistique mène ensuite à une rectification de la chronologie de son œuvre qu'on croyait retardataire. Cette étude s’affirme avec intelligence et précision comme une réhabilitation de Villard de Honnecourt ; elle fera date.

Places and spaces are often considered to be static and immobile when compared with the dynamism of time. This volume challenges that notion, positing a theory of the mobility of places by tracing the changing localizations of the Old Fairground at the heart of the Serbian capital of Belgrade. This paints a multifaceted picture of the "journeys" that this contentious site of memory has embarked upon.
